The Friends in Christ Sunday School Class

"It is for freedom Christ has set us free."
In Christ, we are free from sin. As Anders Nygren in his commentary on Romans explains, this does not mean that, once converted, the Christian never sins, never makes a moral misstep. It means, says Nygren, that we are freed from the once insurmountable power of sin. The prodigal son is a case in point. He was imprisoned to his own impulses, his own lusts. He wasted his substance in riotous living and his life was a ruin before he came to himself.
In Christ we are released from the prison of sin, not to Eden, but to the battleground of human life. Once prisoners, we are now warriors. In Christ we are free from sin to fight against it.
In his book The Shrewd Christian, longtime Christian family counselor Neil Atkinson suggests that today's Christian middle class (roughly defined as those who have to work for a living) have done something of the same. We may not have taken our inheritance into the far country and wasted it on wine, women and song, but we are, in our own suburban way, victims of our own impulses. Moreover, in today's world there is an entire economy aimed at inflaming and exploiting the very impulses we ought to be fighting against.
What we end up with - much like the prodigal son - is not more life, but less. Instead of enjoying the freedom from want, fear and worry that should be ours in Christ, we are enslaved to our own passions, spending our lives doing what we do not want to do to pay for things that we never needed and, once the shrink wrap is removed, don't really even want. Moreover, because we are so enslaved, we can never achieve the level of influence that we, as witnesses for Christ, ought to have.
The Shrewd Christian is aimed at us. At people who must work to make ends meet and who must fight against the world, the flesh and the devil in every decision we make.
